Background

Background

This study was initiated during one of my units in the final year of my Bachelor's in Interactive Media Design. In this unit, we were instructed to create an entire user experience, which included developing an application of our choice and syncing it with a physical device. The scope of this unit was to encourage us to think outside the box. Throughout our years in school, we were accustomed to creating only applications or websites, which was relatively easy for most of us. However, this time we were challenged to take it a step further by incorporating a device that would work with or be controlled by the application. The challenging part of the project was designing the product concept and determining how it would operate.

Problems

Today's fast-paced society poses challenges for new mothers who must navigate an amazing yet demanding experience. Many women balance work and childcare, often requiring them to hire nannies, send their kids to daycare, or rely on loved ones. When providing multiple people care for a baby, it can be difficult for the mother to stay informed due to her physical absence, leading to missed important updates.

Interviews

Interviews

A few interviews were conducted to gain a better understanding of how parents track and learn their baby's schedule, as well as to identify what parents need or would find useful. The most important insights were transformed into user personas.

The participants included both experienced parents and first-time parents. Experienced parents were asked what they would have liked to have when they had their baby, while new moms were asked what type of support they would want. Other questions included getting acquainted with sleeping schedules, feeding, diaper changes, etc.

A few interviews were conducted to gather a better understanding on how a parent is able to track and learn their baby's schedule. As well as taking notes on what parents need or what would be useful to have. The most imporatnt notes were transformed into user personas. The identity of the participants were protected, therefore the images and names below are public domain images, however

Bio

I am a new father, and I get constantly stressed about my baby. I worry whether she is breathing correctly, whether her temperature is right, whether she is drinking enough. Having such a product will ease my and her mothers mind. In addition, it would be nice if I could help my wife out more, by giving her more time to sleep and not having to wake her up to update her or asking her questions about the feeding time, or diaper change.

Personality

Musician, plays Jazz

Singer/songwriter

Likes experimenting with DIY home furniture

Goals & Needs

Being able to have another account for the father

Syncing between the both parents

Tips and feedbacks on taking care of a baby (According to age)

Have an online forum to ask general questions and have a section to speak to our paediatrician

Frustrations

Annoying ads

Disorganised layouts, especially in the homepage and navigation

Too much colour

Data Formulation

Data Formulation

During this phase, I gathered all the necessary data onto sticky notes to ensure I didn't forget anything. All the points listed were utilized during the low-fidelity sketches.

Design

Low-Fidelity

Low-Fidelity

The primary theme for the application was intentionally designed to be dark mode. This choice was made to alleviate eye strain for parents, particularly during late-night app usage. While babies are typically associated with light and pastel colours, I opted for dark tones to ensure the comfort of parents. Since this application is specifically tailored for parental use rather than children, it's crucial that parents feel at ease while using it.

Usability Testing

Usability Testing

For the usability testing, a series of tests were conducted with a group of participants to evaluate the application's usability. They were asked to complete tasks such as:

  1. Navigate to the diaper page and add a new event

  2. Navigate to the food page and add a new event in the formula section

  3. Change the details in the profile

  4. Track your baby's location

  5. Add a new medical event

  6. Add a new parent

  7. Download a PDF containing all of your baby's activities

After analyzing the results, most users did quite well and found most pages quickly. However, some users pointed out an issue with question 7. When asked to download a PDF of "activities," most participants went straight to the Activity page. However, to download the PDF, one must go to the settings page and navigate to the "Download PDF" section. This was deemed slightly inconvenient by some participants, but after finding the correct location, they became accustomed to it. Overall, all participants were excited to use the application and commented favorably on it.

Final Remarks

Final Remarks

With the final prototype created, I believe I have met the goals outlined at the beginning of the design process. For this assignment, I designed a responsive application called Bloom. The product designed for this application also meets the criteria and everything came together well quite well at the end.

If I had more time, I would dive deeper into developing some of the nice-to-have features. These features would add more character to the product and increase its competitiveness.

Future Improvements

Future Improvements
  1. A settings page dedicated to the caregivers section allows the admin (the parents, in this case) to control what the caregivers have access to.

  2. A light mode variation can be added for users who prefer that style.

  3. Animated screens can be enhanced, especially the page with the bottle, where the milk level changes according to the ‘ml’ set on the side.

  4. Similarly, the teething page could be better animated to give users full control over tracking their child's teething progress.
